Coronavirus/covid-19 COURT INFORMATION

JURY

Q: WHAT IF I HAVE RECEIVED A JURY SUMMONS TO APPEAR IN COURT?

A: The court has resumed summonsing during COVID-19 beginning June 15, 2020. If directed to report for service, much smaller groups of jurors not to exceed 20 would be scheduled to appear at any one time in order to maintain proper social distancing. Some of the court's COVID-Safe practices include: all persons – jurors, judges, attorneys, witnesses, staff and visitors – entering the building must consent to having their temperature checked prior to screening and must wear a mask and practice social distancing the entire time they are in the building; maximum seating thresholds; no-contact juror check-in; one-way directional traffic throughout the building; protective Plexiglas installed, wherever possible; and cleaning and disinfecting of all areas. Protecting the health and well-being of citizens who ensure our American system of justice works is our highest priority. Thank you for your service.

Q: IS THE CLERK'S OFFICE OPEN FOR BUSINESS?

Both the Santa Barbara and Santa Maria jury offices are open but are not currently conducting in-person transactions. You may reschedule your jury service at juryservice.sbcourts.org, or you may contact the jury office to request your jury service be deferred to a future date.

If you are experiencing any acute respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath, coughing, headaches, have flu-like symptoms, or have a fever, DO NOT report to jury service.

COVID-Safe Protocols

Jury trials are a critical and unique part of our American democracy and are particularly important during challenging times. Jurors bring common sense and a citizen's perspective to our criminal and civil justice proceedings, and help lawyers and judges resolve conflicts peacefully. The right to a jury trial is so important that it is included in our constitution. Preserving that right, however, depends on the willingness of citizens like you to serve on juries.

We understand that some of you may have concerns about reporting to jury duty during the COVID-19 pandemic. On behalf of the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Barbara, I want to assure you that the judiciary has and continues to work diligently to protect the health and safety of every person who enters a courthouse. Every court has implemented safeguards recommended by the health authorities, including the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), California Department of Public Health, and the Santa Barbara County Health Department, to offer maximum protection against the virus.

Our COVID-safe practices include:

  • A minimum of 6-foot distancing between people in courtrooms, juror assembly rooms, elevators, restrooms, and elsewhere throughout our courthouses. This means that potential jurors will not be sitting next to each other during jury selection and those selected will be spread out both in the courtroom and jury deliberation room.
  • No-contact juror check-in process for attendance.
  • One-way traffic throughout the buildings wherever possible.
  • Protective Plexiglas has been installed where physical distancing cannot be maintained.
  • Temperature checks and screening of everyone to ensure someone with symptoms does not enter a court facility.
  • Requiring everyone – jurors, judges, attorneys, witnesses, staff and visitors – to wear a mask when in a court facility. A mask is provided to anyone who does not have one.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting all areas in judicial buildings, particularly high-touch surfaces, such as doors and courtroom seating. Hand sanitizer is available throughout courthouses.

Protecting the health and well-being of citizens who ensure our American system of justice works is our highest priority. Thank you for your service.
