Coronavirus/covid-19 COURT INFORMATION

JUVENILE

MASKS ARE REQUIRED UPON ENTERING JUVENILE COURT. PEOPLE ENTERING THE LOBBY WILL NEED TO WASH THEIR HANDS BEFORE ENTERING COURT.

Q. IS JUVENILE COURT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC?

A. A. The Juvenile Court will be essentially closed for any out of custody hearings through May 23, 2020.

Q. WHAT IF I HAVE A JUVENILE MATTER SET FOR HEARING IN SANTA BARBARA?
A. Until further notice, juvenile matters set for hearing in Santa Barbara have been moved to Santa Maria.

Q. WHAT IF I HAVE A JUVENILE MATTER SCHEDULED DURING THE COURT CLOSURE?

A. With limited exception, all out-of-custody matters scheduled to be heard between March 18th and April 3rd will be continued to a new date that is approximately 60 days from the date of the current hearing. Out of court orders are being mailed to individuals who have First Appearances scheduled between March 17th and April 3rd to notify those individuals of the new dates.

All Truancy matters scheduled between March 18th and April 3rd, 2020 will be continued to a future date in 2020. Notices of the future date will be mailed out.

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE A JUVENILE COURT DATE THAT IS BETWEEN APRIL 3 AND MAY 23, 2020?

A: Contact your attorney to find out your new court date. If you/your child do not have an attorney, contact the Santa Barbara County Juvenile Probation Department to find out your new court date. Some hearings cannot be continued, but presence of the minor is waived. The minor must remain in contact with his/her attorney or the Santa Barbara County Juvenile Probation Department. Do not come to court. Out of custody petitions will not be filed until after May 23, 2020. Once the petition has been filed then notices of hearing will be sent out.

Q: WHAT IF I HAVE A JURISDICTIONAL OR OTHER HEARING BETWEEN MARCH 18 AND APRIL 3?

A: Contact your attorney to find out your new court date. If you/your child do not have an attorney, contact the Santa Barbara County Juvenile Probation Department to find out your new court date. Some hearings cannot be continued, but presence of the minor is waived. The minor must remain in contact with his/her attorney or the Santa Barbara County Juvenile Probation Department. Do not come to court. Check your mail to learn your new court date.
